Movie Review of Manmadhan Ambu

Manmadhan Ambu is a much awaited Kamal flick for his fans, coming with an all new pairing with Trisha. Coming as it does from a renowned director and big producer; the expectations are sky rocketing to say the least. However, though the film does not meet all your expectations, it nevertheless doesn’t cease to entertain and keep you pinned to your seats with some roller coaster activity, picturesque scenery, peppy music and lively proceedings with a talented star cast.

The story:

The story revolves around Ambu (Trisha) who is an actor named Nisha on screen. She has a very suspicious fiancé in Madan (Madhavan) who suspects her of affairs with co stars. This feeling is fuelled by his mother who does not approve of an actor for a daughter-in-law.
The lovers have a tiff and an accident ensues which leaves them unharmed. However Ambu takes a break from it all to meet her divorced school friend Deepa (Sangeetha) in Europe and the duo with Deepa’s two kids, decide to go on a Mediterranean cruise.

However the suspicious lover hasn’t given up. He sends a detective called Major R Mannar (Kamal), behind her to find out what shes upto. When the rich man does not pay up according to plan, the detective decides to lie and make up a story of  Ambu meeting a lover. This angers Madan who in turn lands up in Europe at their trail. What ensues is a comedy of errors with a series of rib tickling situations. Who wins whom in the end in this curious foursome is the climax.

What works:

The credible performances by all including Trisha dubbing for herself for the first time, are a big plus. Maddy and Sangeetha excel in their roles and for Kamal fans its good to see him without the trappings of ‘avatars’!

The music is peppy and apt and keeps you happy and the special number with Surya in the beginning is a treat in itself.

The story moves forward briskly and the pittoresque locations are all a huge draw. The right mix of comedy and sentiment make it a good, clean family entertainer. The dialogues by Kamal are sharp and at times, thought provoking.

The ship setting works wonders for the film and gives us something different on the Tamil screen.

What doesn’t work:

The final pairing in the climax comes as a surprise since the Kamal- Trisha pairing doesn’t look credibly portrayed on screen.

Oorvasi, who is known for her wit, is wasted as she is forever crying in most shots.
Two many English dialogues may be irksome for the average Tamil cinema viewers.

The script in the second half could have been better. The assembling of all the characters in the climax looks odd. Kamal’s role doesn’t give any challenge to the veteran.

Worth a watch, if you leave your expectations of a typical K S Ravikumar-Kamal film.

Happy Merry Christmas.....

Another day, another month, another year,
Another smile, another tear, another winter,
A summer too, But there will never be another you!
May lovely, happy times decorate this time of the season.
May warm, special memories brighten your new year.
May the wonder of Christmas be with you forever.

Nayan to take a short break from movies

Despite being the most successful actress for the year 2010 in all the four South Indian languages, actress Nayantara isn’t plunging herself into the film world with renewed enthusiasm.  On the contrary, the actress has decided to go on a ‘long leave’ from the world of films and shooting.

“For the time being, I’m in no mood to commit myself to doing any film in any language.  I’m just on a long leave and feeling happier than I had ever felt in my life,” said Nayantara when asked as to what was going to be her next assignment.

Nayantara and controversy go hand in hand.  When she’s around, the presspersons usually don’t worry about filling the columns of their respective journals.  Despite her name featuring prominently in the press about her alleged liaison with Prabhudeva, she has been doing quite well on the professional front.

Following the success of her latest Tamil film ‘Bass Engira Baskaran’, Nayan was flooded with new film offers but she has chosen to reject all those offers saying she needed a ‘break’ from her routine.  She has a solitary film in Telugu in which she plays Goddess Sita.  As she had recently completed the shooting of her pending Malayalam film, she is almost free from her professional work.

Speaking to a leading English daily recently, Nayan had reportedly said, “I can’t confirm or deny rumours that I’m quitting films.  Even a few days back, I was asked to play the epic Savitri for a new film.  Though the character and the script was very exciting, I refused the offer.  For personal reasons, I have decided to give myself a well-deserved break.  Everything else can wait!”

Gambhir, Ishant return for New Zealand series

Chennai: The selections for the New Zealand cricket Test series did not throw up any surprises with Mahendra Singh Dhoni leading a 15-member Indian team for the three-match series beginning Nov 4 in Ahmedabad.

Seamer Ishant Sharma and opening batsman Gambhir return to the squad after sitting out the second of the two Tests against visiting Australia earlier this month due to knee injuries.

The pair played in the first Test at Mohali that India won by one wicket, but missed the second game in Bangalore where the home team clinched the series 2-0 with a seven-wicket victory.

Going out of the Test squad are batsman Abhinav Mukund (Tamil Nadu) and left-arm seamer Jaidev Unadkat (Saurashtra) both of whom were included for the Bangalore game as back-up players and did not get into the playing eleven.
New Zealand are scheduled to play three Test matches at Ahmedabad (Nov 4-8), Hyderabad (Nov 12-16) and Nagpur (Nov 20-24).

The Test series will be followed by five One-Day Internationals on Nov 28 (Guwahati), Dec 1 (Jaipur), Dec 4 (Vadodara), Dec 7 (Bangalore) and Dec 10 (Chennai)

The Indian team will then head to South Africa for three Tests and five ODIs Dec 16-Jan 23, 2011.

The squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Virender Sehwag (vice-captain), Gautam Gambhir, Murali Vijay, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Santhakumaran Sreesanth, Pragyan Ojha, Cheteshwar Pujara and Amit Mishra.

Google Car Can Drive without a Driver

Engineers at Google have tested a self-driving car on the streets of California, the company has announced.

The cars use video cameras mounted on the roof, radar sensors and a laser range finder to "see" other traffic, software engineer Sebastian Thrun said.

They remain manned at all times by a trained driver ready to take control as well as by a software expert.
Google hopes the cars can eventually help reduce road traffic and cut the number of accidents.

In a posting on the company's official blog, Mr Thrun said the self-driven cars had so far covered 140,000 miles on the road.

They have crossed San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate bridge, negotiated the city's famous sloping streets, driven between Google offices, and made it around Lake Tahoe in one piece.

'Exciting future'

Engineers told the New York Times that the forays onto the highways have been largely incident-free, apart from one bump when the car was reportedly hit from behind at a traffic light.

In his Google blog post, Mr Thrun - professor of computer science and electrical engineering at Stanford University - insisted that safety was the "first priority" in the project.

Nobody spotted the Google car crossing the Golden Gate Bridge
Routes are pre-planned, mapped first by real drivers, and local police are briefed in advance, he says.

But he pointed to figures from the World Health Organization which show that more than 1.2 million people are killed each year on the roads, and said that number could and should be reduced.

"We believe our technology has the potential to cut that number, perhaps by as much as half.

"While this project is very much in the experimental stage, it provides a glimpse of what transportation might look like in the future thanks to advanced computer science. And that future is very exciting," he added.

Google has rapidly branched out from its previous core business of search in recent years.

The company already has significant interests in location services through its Google Maps and Google Street View offerings.

SS Chandran the tamil comedian died

Popular comedian and AIADMK deputy propaganda secretary SS Chandran passed away on Friday night (08-10-10). The 69-year old actor-turned-politician died of heart attack. He is survived by his wife and three children Rangaraj, Rohit, and Kanmani.

According to reports, the leading speaker of AIADMK was returning to Mannarkudi after delivering a speech at the public meeting near Muthupet. Sources say that the politican returned to his hotel room and told the party members that he wants to take a rest. After a few hours, one of his assistant found SS Chandran breathless and rushed him to a nearby hospital. However, doctors declared brought dead.

Popularly called as 'Nagaichuvai Selvar' in Tamil cinema, Chandran was a Rajya Sabha member from 2001-07. He stepped back from contesting Lok Sabha elections in 2009 on health grounds.

Karthi & Suriya: Brothers in the advt race

Notwithstanding the ‘undeclared’ in-house competition between him and elder brother and superstar Suriya, Karthi appears to be ready to take on Suriya in the ad world as well.  The brothers, who have become established stars in Tamil film industry, are now seemingly competing against each other in the world of advertisements and endorsements too!

While Suriya has done and has been doing quite a huge number of commercials, younger sibling Karthi has taken up the Airtel assignment after recently being signed up by the cell-phone service provider as its brand ambassador.  He has also said to have ‘floated’ a talk in the industry that he would be taking up any endorsement assignment if the pay packet is nothing less than Re.1 crore.

The ‘Naan Mahaan Alla’ star has reportedly purchased many plots of lands in Saligramam locality, off Vadapali in Chennai.  Many endorsement offers appear to be pouring in for Karthi on a daily basis.  Karthi reportedly is toying with the idea of constructing a star-hotel in the city with the money he has been getting from Kollywood and through his commercial endorsements.

Recently, director Lingusamy remarked at an event that both Suriya and Karthi have been ‘occupying’ important slots in Kollywood.  It appears that the brothers-in-arms are well and truly on their way to acquiring such a status in the advertising world as well!

'Endhiran': Movie Review

Cast : Rajnikanth, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Dannny Denzongpa, Karunas, Santhanam
Director : Shankar
Producer : Sun Pictures( Kalanithi Maran)
Music : AR Rahman
Camera : Ratnavelu
Art : Sabu Cyril

The wait is finally over and Endhiran is here after a good three years almost. But upon watching the film the feeling you come out with is clear. The film is well worth the wait indeed!

For Rajni fans nothing could be better than having two Rajni’s and later hundreds of them in the film! From story, to dialogues, music, editing, special effects and screenplay, the film has it all tightly in place giving the viewer a happy feeling of a satisfying meal at the end of the day.

The story in brief:

Dr Vaseegaran (Rajni) is a scientist working on alternative intelligence and develops a robot that is almost human like, after researching for ten long years. He applies for a patent but his professor and former teacher Bora (Danny) refuses it, proving to the panel that the robot is unfit to be let loose among humans.

Vaseegaran tries to prove him wrong and shows him how useful the robot can be in saving lives and in the army in times of war, his reason for making such a robot in the first place. A series of circumstances however leads him to finally re- programme the robot called Chitty ( Rajni again) with human feelings and emotions so that he is able to distinguish between right and wrong. However things go wrong when Chitty falls in love with Sana ( Aishwarya), who is Vaseegaran’s girlfriend. Another twist in the story leads to Chitty falling in Bora’s evil hands and replicating himself into hundreds of similar robots, so that he can have Sana and destroy Vaseegaran. How Vaseegaran saves the day and what happens to the renegade robot forms the climax.

What works:

Its Rajni magic all the way and director Shankar’s touch can be seen throughout. The big plus of the film is the fact that even though you know Chitty is a machine, the scenes involving him steal the show and bring laughter and tears alike to your eyes. Shankar has been able to arouse emotions in the viewer using machines and graphics and that works even in the final scenes. Both the Rajnis are a treat to watch with humour being an integral part of the story all through. Aishwarya looks awesome and does her part well and Danny as the suave scientist is well chosen.

The music by Rahman is already topping charts and the visuals to go with them are just breathtaking. Each song is better than the other in look and feel, costumes and choreography. The locales especially for the song in South America are wonderful and Ratnavelu’s camerawork has to be commended throughout.

Anthony’s editing is well done to keep the story moving crisply. Shankar should be given credit for keeping the human touch throughout even though the film deals with machines. At no point do the graphics seems forced or extra and all go well in keeping with the story in just the right measure with no fancy gimmicks put in unnecessarily. This goes a long way in keeping the story ‘real’ even though sci- fi is involved. The scale of the film is awesome and the climax scenes keep you riveted. The science labs are a treat to watch for their very international look.

The crisp dialogues are a treat with no lengthy preaching. Yet the point the film is making comes across beautifully in the end leaving a lump in your throat.

What could be better:

Aishwarya seems to have been given similar dance steps and struggles through them strangely in most songs and sometimes seems overly made up. Santhanam and Karunas could have been used more.

The fans of Rajni looking for punch dialogues and the traditional Rajni ‘style’ may have to settle for his new age avatar because he looks totally different as the man and the machine and punch dialogues have been kept few and far between if at all.

The movie is definitely international in terms of feel and style and a sure shot watch worthy film for everyone with emotion, drama, action, humor, music and biggest of them all…the Rajni –Shankar factor!

Must watch!

Chennai Super Kings crowned T20 champions

Johannesburg: The Chennai Super Kings ascended the World T20 throne and the coronation took place at the Wanderers here tonight when they rode high, mighty and handsome while demolishing the Eastern Cape Warriors by eight wickets in the final of the Airtel Champions League.

The Super Kings, winners of the 2010 IPL, thus achieved a unique double as they picked up the cash prize of US Dollars 2.5 Million while the Warriors who looked out of depth, went home richer by USD 1.3 Million.

For bonus, the Super Kings picked up both the Golden Bat and Golden Wicket awards as Murali Vijay (294) and Ravichandran Ashwin (13), who turned 24 only last week, topped for most runs and wickets, respectively. Ashwin also won the Man of the Series award while Vijay was adjudged Man of the Match.

Batting first on winning the toss, the Warriors, after a rollicking start, were all at sea against the “Spin Twins” Muttiah Muralitharan (3 for 16) and Ashwin (2 for 16) and managed just 128 for seven.

In reply, the Super Kings had few problems in chasing down the total. Openers Michael Hussey (51 not out) and Murali Vijay (58), pacing themselves brilliantly, made light of the target with a 103-run partnership as the Super Kings made 132 for two in 19 overs.

The Warriors lost the plot after the exit of skipper David Jacobs who blasted a 21-ball 34. The rest of the batsmen were far too circumspect, especially against the spinners who, on their part, teased and tormented the willow-wielders.

In the event, while the first five overs saw eight boundaries, all by Jacobs, the next 15 had mere five hits to the fence and a six as the Warriors crumbled after a promising start.

Like the proverbial cat on the hot tin roof, Jacobs danced about the crease, hitting fours as if there was no tomorrow. He was severe on the two new ball bowlers, Doug Bollinger and Albie Morkel to set a scorching pace for the innings.

However, it was too good to last and Bollinger struck with a low full toss that Ashwell Prince missed to lose his off-stump, in the fifth over.

Dhoni, shrewd as ever, brought on Ashwin for the next over and the tall offie obliged, courtesy a rash attempt by Jacobs who was caught plumb in front missing a reverse sweep.

The two wickets turned the game around and the Super Kings then cut through the line-up that appeared clueless against the spin of Ashwin and Muralitharan as wickets fell at regular intervals.

The only solace for the Warriors came in the form of the 18 runs that they scored off Balaji’s final over and innings’ 17th with Craig Thyssen belting a six and two boundaries.

Such was the grip that the Super Kings bowlers exerted that the 20th over, bowled by Muralitharan saw only four runs scored for the loss of one wicket, leaving the Warriors floundering at 128 for seven, a total that looked well within the reach of the Chennai outfit.

The Super Kings, as usual, began sedately with Vijay doing most of the scoring. A couple of boundaries off Makhaya Ntini provided the chase an early acceleration as the openers bided their time.

The focus of the openers was to play safe, running the singles hard and an occasional boundary breaking the pattern. The runs came at a steady pace while the Warriors missed out on two opportunities to take a wicket.

Vijay, on 15 in 27 for no loss, was lucky when he edged Juan Theron between the lone slip Justin Kreusch and wicket-keeper Mark Boucher to the third man fence. And when on 35 in a total of 61), he had another reprieve when Boucher fumbled with a collection with the batsman lured out of the crease by Johan Botha.

A quiet word from Hussey apparently steadied Vijay and the pair batted most sensibly while looking to be on a Sunday evening stroll in the park. However, Vijay opened up soon after with two towering sixes before holing out in the deep, before holing out in the deep attempting another off Boje.

In the next over, Suresh Raina got out for a slog shot to provide a little twist to the match as the Super Kings needed run a ball to get to the target which Hussey and Dhoni did quite comfortably.

Quite fittingly, Dhoni delivered the decisive blows with a massive six followed by two boundaries off Theron, bowling the 19th over, to set off the celebrations.

From Auto to Australia, Talk is Cheap... watch out

On my auto rickshaw ride to Santhome, the driver’s mobile phone chirped out loud. The driver pulled over and inserted his headphone and got back on to the road continuing towards Arumbakam. Needless to say, the conversation was noisy. After hanging up, he revealed the call originated from Melbourne, Australia and he had to talk at the highest pitch as it was a long distance call. It is not that drivers are able to have a full forty-five minute conversation while maneuvering during the peak traffic in Chennai. It is also that international calls on cell phones are dirt cheap.
What is good to the auto-rickshaw driver is not necessarily good for the mobile operators and vendors. Price-war is saturated and probably will not go down any further. Profit margins for mobile providers are equally low. The push is on for selling more data services. Local vendors are given more incentives to sell. Yet, the data-plan growth does not come easy. So far mobile operations have shown they can make profits from the poor. But to persuade smaller vendors to sell next level of data service require major investment and that could be a stretch.

There is sufficient support for advertisements embedded on mobile applications that could encourage geo positioned sales. Manufacturers like Nokia are encouraging software developers to write applications for their devices, much based on the success of iPhone and Blackberry. Looking ahead at the technology horizon, developing mobile applications could in fact be a fast growth route for small businesses. If small companies succeed in selling hundred rupee software for mobile phones, it will not be that far away to see an auto-driver to pull over to type a few line to his friends in Australia!

Petrol price increased from yesterday

Sept 21, 2010: Public sector company Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) will raise prices of petrol by 27 paise a litre, effective today. Other public sector fuel retailers— Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum— will follow the market leader by raising petrol price between 28 and 26 paise, reports said.

A litre of petrol in Delhi will now cost Rs 51.83 a litre, in Calcutta Rs 55.69, in Bombay Rs 56.25 and in Chennai Rs 56.31. The increase reportedly follows oil companies’revenue loss of 25 paise a litre for the first time in September, since pricing was freed.

After the announcement of deregulation in June, petrol prices went up by Rs 3.50 a litre and diesel by Rs 2 a litre. The government however asked its oil firms to hold the price line for petrol.

At a meeting in July, the companies had decided that they would review petrol prices on a monthly basis, unless there was a sharp fluctuation in the prices of crude oil and international petrol. However, no increase was made after the meeting

Online millionaires on the rise, says eBay

London, Aug 22 (ANI): Thinking of opening an online business? Then hurry up, for it is one of the most successful ways of making money, according to new figures.
Seven online businesses will make over 1 million pounds despite only starting last year, says Internet auction site eBay.

The site has revealed that the number of million-pound businesses using the site has increased tenfold since the beginning of the recession.
As many as 25, 000 people have started their own business in the last two years on eBay in spite of recession.

"Over the last few years, we've had to become more competitive and make stricter purchasing decisions, to ensure our products remain cheaper than the exact same items found on the high street," the Sky News quoted Clare Gilmarton of UK eBay as saying.

"Businesses operating on eBay have access to a huge global customer base with over 17 million people using the site each month.

"This makes it an extremely attractive option coupled with low start-up and overhead costs, and the flexibility to react more quickly to retail trends and consumer needs.

"This has meant online companies can offer great value and be more recession resilient than many bricks and mortar businesses," he said. (ANI)

Release of "Endhiran" delayed?

It was earlier reported in these columns that Sun Pictures, the producers of Rajni-starrer ‘Endhiran’, was facing problems aplenty with the distributors in releasing the film.  It appears that Sun Pictures is likely to have more tough time coming in the form of the film’s director Shankar.  Want to know why?

Shankar is said to have not forgotten the ‘limited liberty’ he was allowed as a filmmaker during the making of the film, which took him almost two years.  He is said to be taking out his anger and desperation now, reports point out.  Even as Sun Pictures are leaving no stone unturned in their effort to release the film as soon as possible, Shankar is said to be taking his own time and doing things at a leisurely pace.

The computer-generated graphics work, entrusted to a firm based in Hong Kong, have not yet arrived.  A.R. Rahman, the music director, has only completed half of the re-recording work, an essential element of the post-production work of a film.  Shankar, who should take the initiative in urging everyone to work at a fast pace, is said to be functioning very patiently, much to the surprise of Sun Pictures.

Even as Sun Pictures are wondering what to do to release the film by September or early October, many small and medium budget films are thinking about making use of the gap and earning some money!

The story of Ajith's "Mangatha"

Along with the screening of Karthi’s latest film ‘Naan Mahaan Alla’, the trailer of Ajit-starrer ‘Mangkatha’ is also being shown in theatres. The trailer, measuring a length of one reel, shows Ajit in the same costume in which he was spotted at the film’s muhurat shot last month.

This could only mean one thing: the director of the film, Venkatprabhu, must have shot the trailer without straining himself or Ajit and had made the same in a hurry. The haste with which the trailer has been made conveys many messages, observers point out.

One of the reasons is to meet the unlimited eager of Ajit’s fans to watch him on big screen in a new movie. Though the film is likely to take at least a couple of months from now to hit the screen, the trailer has reportedly been shot to keep Ajit’s fan base intact and to keep them under some expectations of the upcoming movie of their idol.

The reaction of Shalini Ajit, who was at the Sathyam Cinemas recently to watch the film ‘Naan Mahaan Alla’, to the trailer was a sight to behold. Apparently to please Shalini, the theatre management screened the trailer not just once but three times, making her blush and erupt in joy and surprise!

Happy birthday Chennai !!!!!

From a tiny village to a high-tech metropolis with major automobile units, a IT industry and pride of place as the cultural capital of South, its been a long and eventful for Chennai, the Madras, which turns 371 on Sunday.

As befits the occasion, a week-long birthday has been drawn up by various bodies, including Archeological in Survey of India, University of Madras, the Chennai Museum and Anna University to mark the great 'Madras day' celebrations -- a wide canvas of cultural and literary activities.

"As part of the celebrations, we have organised the photo exhibition titled 'Chennaiyil Paadal Pettra Thiruthalangal' at Clive's building in Fort St. George, ASI superintending Archaeologist Sathyabama Badrinath told PTI.

She said even before the British came to Madras (now Chennai), the place was 'sanctified' and temples were built, which even today are acclaimed and respected.

Heritage walks, school exchange programmes, poetry sessions, Carnatic music and quiz contests, food festivals and rallies, photo exhibitions and bike tours will give Chennaites glimpses of a city they never knew.

"Madras Day focuses on the city, its history, its past and present. The core team motivates communities, groups, companies and campuses in the city to host events that celebrate the city", city's famous historian S Muthiah said.

It was on this day in 1639 that British Administrator Francis Day got permission from the wards of Chennapa Naicker, a chieftain ruling the fishing hamlet near Madras Harbour to construct Madraspatam as it was referred then by the British.

The deal was struck by Francis Day,his 'dubash' Beri Thimmappa and their superior Andrew Cogan, with local Nayak rulers.

The original document relating to building of Fort St.

George, a historic fort which was for a while the seat of power of East India Company, is said to have been signed at Chandragiri fort in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

Robert Clive, founder of the British empire in India, got married in a church inside the fort. His marriage certificate is still the prized possession of the museum in the fort.

Unknown to many is that villages around temples like Parthasarathy in Triplicane and Kapaleeswarer temple in Mylapore near the Southern coast and Marudheeswarer temple in Thiruvanmiyur existed for several centuries, long before the Europeans arrived here.
